Is Hackney safe? Here’s what you need to know.
I’ve lived in London for almost a decade, and some of my fondest (and busiest) years were spent right in the heart of Hackney. I’ve rented flats, worked, and socialised across the borough – from late nights in Dalston to relaxed weekends around London Fields – so I know first-hand what it’s really like to spend time here.
Hackney has a reputation for being a little rough around the edges, and with crime statistics often making headlines, it’s fair to wonder: is Hackney safe for tourists in 2025? That’s exactly what this post will unpack.
I’ll walk you through the latest crime data, share my own perspective as a local, and give you practical tips to help you feel confident exploring Hackney (and London in general). East London has long carried a “bad rep,” but the reality is very different – and in my opinion, this creative, underrated borough is far too good to skip because of safety worries.

Is Hackney Safe for Visitors and Tourists?
Overall, yes – Hackney is safe for tourists. The borough (and East London in general) has long carried a reputation as the “rougher” side of the city. While it’s true that crime rates are statistically higher in Hackney than in some other areas, violent crime against visitors is very uncommon. In fact, you’re far more likely to encounter petty theft or pickpocketing in busy central spots like Oxford Street than while wandering around Hackney.
Like any big city, staying safe mostly comes down to using common sense. Keeping an eye on your drink on a night out, sticking to well-lit streets at night, and being aware of your belongings on public transport are the kind of everyday precautions you’d take anywhere in London – not just Hackney.
Personally, I’ve never had any issues in Hackney, and I’ve spent countless days and nights out in the area. Even when heading home solo, I’ve always felt safe, though having a walking buddy never hurt. I have a whole guide on solo female travel in London with lots of great tips for staying safe and making friends in the city.
How Safe is Hackney at Night?
If you stick to the busier areas like Dalston, Shoreditch, or around London Fields, you should be fine. There you’ll generally find plenty of people out and about, which helps with safety.
That said, some quieter residential streets and poorly lit areas are best avoided at night, especially if you’re on your own. Overall though, Hackney’s nightlife is much like the rest of London: lively, fun, and safe if you take the usual precautions.

The 2025 Crime Statistics: Comparing Hackney and Camden
Hackney is by far one of London’s trendiest boroughs, but it does come with a slightly higher crime rate than the London average. However, it’s important to have some context, which is why I’ve compared the Hackney stats with Camden – a borough locals, visitors and tourists have no worries visiting.
- 🏙 Overall crime rate: Hackney – 93 crimes per 1,000 people (19% above the London average) | Camden – 98 per 1,000 (26% above the London average).
- 🚨 Crime risk score (5-min walk): Hackney – 580 | Camden – 623.
- 💰 Most common crime: Theft from the person. Hackney – 8,500 offences | Camden – 10,016 offences.
- 🛍 Shoplifting: Hackney – 2,350 offences | Camden – 4,123 offences.
- 🔪 Possession of weapons: Hackney – 120 offences | Camden – 150 offences.
- 📉 Trends: Hackney shows a slight increase in theft and burglary over 3 years, while violent crime and vehicle crime are trending down. Camden has a similar mix but a higher overall risk.
As the numbers show, Hackney sits above the London average, but actually below Camden which welcomes countless visitors every day. Hopefully, this demonstrates that the “bad reputation” is unimportant. Stay sensible, and you’ll be able to enjoy Hackney (and Camden!) with no issues. All stats come from CrimeRate.co.uk.

Safety Tips For Exploring Hackney
Now that we’ve answered the question “is Hackney safe?”, let’s move on to some practical advice. Here are a few simple tips to help you feel confident and stay safe while exploring the borough!
1. Plan Your Route Home
One of the best ways to feel safe in Hackney is to plan how you’ll get home before you head out. Hackney isn’t on the Underground, so transport can be a little trickier than in other parts of London. The Overground runs fairly late and connects to other lines, but it’s worth checking the last train times in advance as they’re not 24-hour.
Most London buses run 24/7, and Hackney is generally well-served by them. For extra peace of mind, apps like Uber or Bolt are widely used and reliable across East London. If you’re heading home solo, I’d recommend booking a ride rather than walking long distances late at night. A bit of prep goes a long way towards making nights out stress-free.

2. Stay Somewhere Well-Reviewed
Where you base yourself can make a huge difference to how safe and comfortable you feel. Shoreditch is one of the best areas in Hackney for visitors, partly because it’s better connected than much of East London. You’ll find both the Northern line at Old Street and easy access to Liverpool Street station. From there, you’re linked directly to the Tube, trains, and Stansted Airport services.
Safe & Stylish Hotels in Shoreditch
📍 One Hundred Shoreditch
Scandi-minimalist design meets East London vibes. Think moody interiors, a rooftop terrace with skyline views, and plenty of creative communal spaces. Trendy, stylish, and definitely on the bougie side.
📍 Redchurch Townhouse
Part of the Soho House family (but unusually, open to everyone), this boutique spot is right on iconic Redchurch Street – arguably Shoreditch’s best address. Expect luxe interiors, buzzy surroundings, and that signature Soho House attention to detail.

3. Don’t Flash Your Valuables
Like anywhere in London, opportunistic theft can happen — especially from bike or moped thieves who are quick to snatch phones or bags. Keep your valuables out of sight when walking around, avoid texting on the street in quieter areas, and use a crossbody bag you can zip up securely.
4. Stick to Well-Lit Streets at Night
Hackney has loads of lively spots — from Shoreditch bars to Broadway Market pubs — but once you wander onto residential streets or the canal, it can feel a lot darker and emptier. If you’re heading home late, stick to main roads where there are more people, better lighting, and CCTV. It’s the same common-sense advice you’d follow anywhere in London, but worth keeping in mind in Hackney, where not every street is well-lit.

Round Up: Is Hackney Safe?
Hackney might get a bad rap, but in reality, it’s a fun and vibrant place to explore. With a bit of planning, like choosing a good spot to stay, keeping an eye on your stuff, and knowing how to get around, you’ll have nothing to worry about. So go on, enjoy the coffee spots, street art, and nightlife. Hackney’s safe, and it’s waiting for you!
