I love a London staycation, even after calling it home for almost ten years! Booking a hotel, catching a show, and grabbing dinner in town is my dream way to celebrate a special occasion. And even though I’ve stayed in luxury hotels all over the world, nothing quite beats a night in London!
My most recent staycation (a 30th birthday present from my partner) was at Middle Eight in Covent Garden. In this Middle Eight hotel review, I’ll share my experience — from the decor to the room, dining, and cocktails! London is full of amazing hotels, but if you’re after somewhere central with a lively atmosphere, Middle Eight is well worth considering. It’s just a short walk from Covent Garden, Southbank, Soho, and The British Museum — making it a great base for exploring.
Overall, I loved my stay. The room felt spacious for central London, and the breakfast was a proper highlight. The only real drawback is that there’s no pool — but depending on your budget, Middle Eight makes a fantastic choice for a city break or special occasion.

Now let’s get into the details. Here are the highlights of Middle Eight and what really stood out to us during our stay.
The Concept & Design
Middle Eight makes a strong first impression. The lobby felt spacious and calm, with beautiful artwork, a stunning bar, and thoughtful touches like homemade snacks at reception and a bag service to help with luggage. The interiors are a touch mid-century, creating a space that feels modern and inviting.
Interestingly, Middle Eight takes its name from a musical term — though I only realised this after my stay! It’s a subtle theme woven into the design, from artwork to the names of the suites.
Rooms & Suites at Middle Eight
Middle Eight offers a range of rooms to suit different budgets and occasions — from the compact Cosy Pad to the more spacious Classic Chic, Urban Deluxe, and Executive Style rooms, plus a collection of suites (each named after a famous song). The suites are proper show-stoppers, with things like indoor gardens, standalone bathtubs, and balconies.
My Personal Room Experience
We stayed in an Urban Deluxe room, which felt perfectly sized for a city break. It was cosy, nicely decorated, and spotless throughout. The bed was super comfy, and the bathroom was just the right size for a short stay. A little highlight was the minibar — well stocked, with the first round of everything complimentary! If you’re anything like me, you love a freebie.
Excellent Dining & Drinks Options
Breakfast at Middle Eight was faultless. Instead of a standard buffet, everything is cooked to order, which makes the experience feel way more luxurious. There was a great range of vegan and vegetarian options, as well as delicious pastries and good coffee. Paired with the calm, stylish setting, it was the perfect start to the day.
In the evening, the hotel’s Sycamore Vino Cucina restaurant and bar really came into their own. The space is beautifully designed, with a cool, relaxed atmosphere that feels distinctly Italian without being over the top. The cocktails were particularly impressive — some of the best I’ve had in a long while — and overall, the vibe was perfect.
Fantastic Entertainment & Facilities
One of Middle Eight’s biggest draws is the QT Speakeasy, the hotel’s own live music venue. With its low lighting, intimate vibe, and amazing performances (often led by saxophonist Leo Green and his band), it feels like a slice of old-school glamour in the middle of Covent Garden. It’s the kind of place you can settle in with a cocktail and lose track of time.
Beyond the nightlife, the hotel also has a small but well-equipped gym for those wanting to squeeze in a workout (not me!), and a cosy library space perfect for reading, working, or playing board games.
The Location: Staying in Covent Garden
Middle Eight couldn’t be better placed for exploring central London. Covent Garden itself is right on the doorstep, with its mix of restaurants, bars, theatres, and shops. During our stay, we wandered over to Neal’s Yard (always worth a stop for its colourful courtyard) and had margaritas and nibbles at The Barbary, which I’d definitely recommend if you’re in the area.
Getting Around London
The hotel is just a short walk from both Holborn and Covent Garden tube stations, making it easy to get across the city. It’s also well placed for walking — we headed over the river one evening for drinks at Forza Wine Bar in the Southbank Centre, which was lovely.
Middle Eight Hotel: Cons
To be honest, there aren’t many downsides to Middle Eight that come to mind! But here are a couple of things worth mentioning if you’re considering booking.
The Spa Situation
The only real disappointment I had at Middle Eight was the lack of pool or spa facilities. At first glance, the website made it look like the hotel has its own spa. But in reality, they’ve partnered with one nearby. Not a deal-breaker, but worth knowing before you book.
Price & Value for Money
The other thing to keep in mind is the price point. Of course, this is always relative, but you are paying partly for the central location. That said, Middle Eight is a true five-star hotel, and you get the luxury touches — from stylish design to excellent dining — that I think make it feel worth the money.
Prices start from around £300 per night, depending on the time of year and type of room. The suites are a fair bit more, starting at around £1,000 per night — more if there is a balcony! Breakfast is £33.50 per person and you can order anything from the menu. I had a vegan English breakfast (delicious), coffee, juice and pastry.
