Wondering if Bethnal Green is a nice place to live?
Choosing where to live in London can feel overwhelming, especially when every neighbourhood has its pros and cons. I lived in Bethnal Green for four years, and I have mixed opinions on the area. It’s far from perfect, but its central location, excellent transport links and abundance of things to do are hard to ignore.
In this guide, I’ll share my experience of living in Bethnal Green, alongside the latest crime statistics, average rent prices, transport links, green spaces and things to do. I’ll also cover the main pros and cons to help you decide whether Bethnal Green is a good place to live.
What Is Bethnal Green Like Overall?
Honestly, it depends on which part of Bethnal Green you’re talking about. Bethnal Green Road is busy, loud and pretty grimy, but venture off the main drag, and you’ll find some surprisingly beautiful streets. There are some great pubs in the area too, while Shoreditch, Broadway Market and Victoria Park are all within walking distance.
I had an amazing time in Bethnal Green, living in a warehouse flat with five other people. Our rent was dirt cheap (sadly, not the norm), so we happily put up with the occasional drug deal on our doorstep!
The Pros of Living in Bethnal Green
There are plenty of reasons why Bethnal Green is a great place to live. From excellent transport links to being within easy reach of some of East London’s best spots, its location is definitely one of its biggest advantages.
Excellent transport links
Bethnal Green Tube station is right in the heart of the area, with the Central line making it easy to get into central London. You also have Bethnal Green and Cambridge Heath Overground stations nearby, as well as plenty of handy bus routes. It’s also a really easy place to get back to at night, thanks to the Central line being a night tube, which is always a bonus.
Close to Hackney, the City and central London
One of my favourite things about Bethnal Green is how close you are to so many great areas. Shoreditch is within walking distance, as is Victoria Park and London Fields – one of my favourite parts of Hackney. Bethnal Green is particularly convenient if you work in Shoreditch or the City, as I did, because you can easily walk to work. Central London is around 15 minutes away by Tube, making it a really convenient base for exploring the rest of London too.
Great restaurants, pubs and things to do
One of Bethnal Green’s biggest pros is just how many great things there are to see and do. From the Backyard Comedy Club and Young V&A to the infamous Vagina Museum, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Just a little further out, you’ll find Mile End Climbing Wall, which is a great spot for a day out and even has a sauna. Genesis Cinema is nearby too, and is brilliant if you’re after cheap cinema tickets.
The food and drink scene is another highlight. Some of my favourites include Sodo for amazing pizza, Tempo for wine and modern South East Asian cooking, and The Sun Tavern for a cute, classic pub.
The Cons of Living in Bethnal Green
Of course, no area of London is perfect, and Bethnal Green definitely has its downsides. While its central location and lively atmosphere are major pros, a few things are worth considering before you make any moves.
Expensive rent & property prices
Bethnal Green is in Zone 2, so expensive rents and property prices are pretty inevitable. According to Home.co.uk, average rents are currently £2,148 pcm for a one-bedroom flat and £3,000 pcm for a two-bedroom flat. If you’re lucky, you can find something cheaper, or you can opt for a flat share as I did, but ultimately, you’ll be paying for the location.
Some areas feel less ‘polished’ than others
As I mentioned earlier, there are parts of Bethnal Green that feel quite run-down. The high street itself can be pretty grimy, and after a few years of seeing the same litter and general lack of upkeep, I definitely started to get tired of it.
There’s also a stark contrast between the more polished pockets and the levels of deprivation in the wider area. Research from Loughborough University and the End Child Poverty Coalition found that Bethnal Green and Stepney had the highest child poverty rate of any London constituency in their 2022/23 data, at around 51%.
Noise and vehicle pollution
Of all the areas I’ve lived in, Bethnal Green was by far the noisiest and most polluted. Air quality is a genuine downside, particularly around the busier roads. You can even see the impact of the pollution – just look at the front of the warehouse I lived in. The grime was thick.
Crime can be a concern in certain areas
Although Bethnal Green’s crime risk score has fallen by 28% over the past 10 years, it’s still the dodgiest-feeling area that I’ve lived in. It’s also the most central area I’ve lived in, so that’s worth bearing in mind when comparing it with quieter parts of London.

There’s a lot to consider when deciding where to live, so I’ve answered some of Google’s most commonly asked questions below, along with a few I think are particularly useful if you’re trying to figure out whether Bethnal Green is a good place to live.
Is Bethnal Green Safe?
Yes, generally speaking, Bethnal Green is safe. It isn’t one of the safest areas in London, but I lived there for four years and never had any serious issues myself. Crime risk has also fallen over the past decade.
Is Bethnal Green Good for Families?
Although you have the Young V&A on your doorstep, I wouldn’t consider Bethnal Green one of the best areas to move to with a family. Pollution levels are relatively high, and there are much greener and quieter areas nearby that I’d personally choose instead.

Is Bethnal Green Good for Young Professionals?
Bethnal Green is certainly convenient for young professionals, particularly if you work in the City, Shoreditch or central London. There are loads of great bars, pubs and restaurants, and the transport links are excellent. You can even walk to the City, which is a real luxury in London.
That said, I didn’t include Bethnal Green in my guide to the best areas to live in London for young professionals. While the location is hard to beat, I’d personally choose some of the nearby areas instead, unless transport links are a priority for you.
So, Is Bethnal Green a Good Place to Live?
After four years of living in Bethnal Green, I have very mixed feelings about the area. There’s no denying that the location is fantastic – you’re close to the City, Shoreditch, Hackney and central London, with brilliant transport links and plenty of great pubs, restaurants and things to do.
But personally, I wouldn’t choose to live there again. The noise, pollution, crime and general grime eventually started to outweigh the benefits for me. That said, I also had some of the best years of my twenties there, and if you find the right street (and, ideally, the right rent!), I can see why people love it.
So, is Bethnal Green a good place to live? I’d say it depends on what you’re looking for. If location, nightlife and convenience are your priorities, it has a lot going for it. If you’re after somewhere quieter, greener and a little more polished, I’d look at some of the nearby areas instead.
